His Belt (Part Ten) Page 4
“I thought you were friends with Dolores.”
“I was. Until she became a complete bitch.”
I don’t bother asking why Dolores became a complete bitch. The last thing I want is some kind of soliloquy from my mother about her jailhouse dramas.
“That sucks,” I say, trying to smooth down my hair, eventually giving up and slipping the hair tie off my wrist and wrestling my hair into a ponytail.
“Today isn’t about me, though, is it, princess?” Her voice is kind, which sends a shiver down my spine. The only time my mother calls me princess is when she’s about to torment me.
“What do you mean?” I ask, trying to keep my voice light.
“Well, you’re famous. Even more famous than I am.”
A sick feeling starts in my stomach as I reach for a pair of Elijah’s sweatpants and pull them on.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, I was never trending on twitter, was I? Of course, I have a lot of facebook fan pages, and someone did start that crowd funding campaign for my legal fund, but as far as the more mainstream outlets --”
The rest of what she’s saying gets cut off as I open the twitter app on my phone.
I scroll through the trending topics, my hands shaking.
There I am.
Natalie Bennett.
Number five on the list, right under Elijah at number four.
It’s happened, just like I knew it would, but was somehow hoping against hope it wouldn’t.
The picture of us.
It’s gone viral.
And everyone in America -- from my co-workers to complete strangers -- is going to see me tied up and naked.
